My horror at PoW sex abuse pics
By JOHN SCOTT
and MICHAEL LEA
THE young mum who uncovered the Iraqi PoW sex snaps scandal said last night: “I felt sick to the stomach at those pictures.”
Kelly Tilford, 22, called police after developing a film in her photo shop.
The shocking pictures — revealed by The Sun yesterday — showed male Iraqis apparently forced into sexual positions by their British captors. In another a prisoner was suspended by rope from a fork-lift truck driven by a laughing Brit.
Fusilier Gary Bartlam, 18, of Tamworth, Staffs, is being grilled by the Army’s top criminal investigator — amid fears the scandal is the tip of an iceberg.

U.S. Encouraged by Vietnam Vote : Officials Cite 83% Turnout Despite Vietcong Terror
WASHINGTON, Sept. 3-- United States officials were surprised and heartened today at the size of turnout in South Vietnam’s presidential election despite a Vietcong terrorist campaign to disrupt the voting. According to reports from Saigon, 83 per cent of the 5.85 million registered voters cast their ballots yesterday. Many of them risked reprisals threatened by the Vietcong."

United States: trade in torture
This is a story of private jets flying out of Germany, of kidnappings on European streets, and of torture. It has a cast of lawyers, spies, suspected terrorists, innocent bystanders and an ex-CIA boss who believes that ‘human rights is a very flexible concept’.
By Stephen Grey
ASWEDISH immigration lawyer, Kjell Jnsson, was on the phone to a client, asylum seeker Mohamed al-Zery from Egypt, on the afternoon of 18 December 2001. “Suddenly there was a voice coming in, saying to al-Zery to end the telephone conversation,” Jnsson recalls. “It was the Swedish police, who had arrested him.”
Jnsson had requested the Swedish government to promise that there would be no quick decision on Zery’s application for refugee status: he feared that Zery would be tortured if sent back to Cairo. But Zery was expelled in the shortest time that Jnsson had encountered in 30 years of asylum work.
Five hours after the arrest of Zery and another Egyptian, Ahmed Agiza, both were deported from Stockholm’s Brmma airport. It was not revealed for another two years that there had been a US plane at the airport, plus a team of US agents who, it has been claimed, picked up the suspects, manacled their wrists and ankles, dressed them in orange overalls, drugged them, and bundled them into the plane.
Jnsson said the US team “were wearing black hoods and they had no uniforms; they were wearing jeans. The Swedish security police described them as very professional.” The whole operation took less than 10 minutes. “It was obvious that they have done things like this before.”"

My best friend since college, Melody Townsel, was stationed in
Kyrgyzstan on a US AID project. During her stay there, she became
embroiled in a controversy in which the oh-so-diplomatic John Bolton was
a key player. She described the incident in a letter to the Senate
Foreign Relations Committee members (who have thus far responded with a
yawn), and I wanted to share it with a larger audience.
Here's a small taste:
"Mr. Bolton proceeded to chase me through the halls of a Russian hotel
-- throwing things at me, shoving threatening letters under my door and,
generally, behaving like a madman."
Here's the entire text of her letter:
Dear Sir:
I'm writing to urge you to consider blocking in committee the nomination
of John Bolton as ambassador to the UN.
In the late summer of 1994, I worked as the subcontracted leader of a US
AID project in Kyrgyzstan officially awarded to a HUB primary
contractor. My own employer was Black, Manafort, Stone & Kelly, and I
reported directly to Republican leader Charlie Black.
After months of incompetence, poor contract performance, inadequate
in-country funding, and a general lack of interest or support in our
work from the prime contractor, I was forced to make US AID officials
aware of the prime contractor's poor performance.
I flew from Kyrgyzstan to Moscow to meet with other Black Manafort
employees who were leading or subcontracted to other US AID projects.
While there, I met with US AID officials and expressed my concerns about
the project -- chief among them, the prime contractor's inability to
keep enough cash in country to allow us to pay bills, which directly
resulted in armed threats by Kyrgyz contractors to me and my staff.
Within hours of sending a letter to US AID officials outlining my
concerns, I met John Bolton, whom the prime contractor hired as legal
counsel to represent them to US AID. And, so, within hours of
dispatching that letter, my hell began.
Mr. Bolton proceeded to chase me through the halls of a Russian hotel --
throwing things at me, shoving threatening letters under my door and,
generally, behaving like a madman. For nearly two weeks, while I awaited
fresh direction from my company and from US AID, John Bolton hounded me
in such an appalling way that I eventually retreated to my hotel room
and stayed there. Mr. Bolton, of course, then routinely visited me there
to pound on the door and shout threats.
When US AID asked me to return to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan in advance of
assuming leadership of a project in Kazakstan, I returned to my project
to find that John Bolton had proceeded me by two days. Why? To meet with
every other AID team leader as well as US foreign-service officials in
Bishkek, claiming that I was under investigation for misuse of funds and
likely was facing jail time. As US AID can confirm, nothing was further
from the truth.
He indicated to key employees of or contractors to State that, based on
his discussions with investigatory officials, I was headed for federal
prison and, if they refused to cooperate with either him or the prime
contractor's replacement team leader, they, too, would find themselves
the subjects of federal investigation. As a further aside, he made
unconscionable comments about my weight, my wardrobe and, with a couple
of team leaders, my sexuality, hinting that I was a lesbian (for the
record, I'm not).
When I resurfaced in Kyrgyzstan, I learned that he had done such a
convincing job of smearing me that it took me weeks -- with the direct
intervention of US AID officials -- to limit the damage. In fact, it was
only US AID's appoinment of me as a project leader in Almaty, Kazakstan
that largely put paid to the rumors Mr. Bolton maliciously circulated.
As a maligned whistleblower, I've learned firsthand the lengths Mr.
Bolton will go to accomplish any goal he sets for himself. Truth flew
out the window. Decency flew out the window. In his bid to smear me and
promote the interests of his client, he went straight for the low road
and stayed there.
John Bolton put me through hell -- and he did everything he could to
intimidate, malign and threaten not just me, but anybody unwilling to go
along with his version of events. His behavior back in 1994 wasn't just
unforgivable, it was pathological.
I cannot believe that this is a man being seriously considered for any
diplomatic position, let alone such a critical posting to the UN. Others
you may call before your committee will be able to speak better to his
stated dislike for and objection to stated UN goals. I write you to
speak about the very character of the man.
It took me years to get over Mr. Bolton's actions in that Moscow hotel
in 1994, his intensely personal attacks and his shocking attempts to
malign my character.
I urge you from the bottom of my heart to use your ability to block Mr.
Bolton's nomination in committee.
Respectfully yours,
Melody Townsel

Whn I read the above, I have to wonder if sending Bolton off to deal with other powerful individuals might not be the best thing for everyone concerned. Surely behaviour such as this will result in his being shot by someone who doesn't have to put up with his brand of pathological bullshit.
A diplomat....My God. This entire administration is off the deep end.

News Fraud
The White House is infiltrating local news broadcasts with taxpayer-funded covert propaganda. At least 20 federal agencies have produced and distributed fake news stories touting Bush administration policies. Last Friday, the Bush administration told government agencies to keep on producing the bogus broadcasts -- even after Congress' Government Accountability Office declared these 'video news releases' to be illegal.
Together we forced an investigation of pundits on the government payroll. With your help, we can force Congress, the Federal Communications Commission and local broadcasters to crack down on covert propaganda and keep fake news off the air.
Once you've signed the petition, Free Press will let you know in the coming weeks about others in your area working to forge 'citizen agreements' with local TV stations to ensure broadcasters always identify their sources.
To learn more, read the in-depth report from Free Press on the systematic effort by the Bush administration to manipulate journalists and the American public."

Goodbye Uncle Sam, Hello Team Europe
By John Feffer, AlterNet. Posted April 14, 2005.
Not only does the world hate us, a new poll shows that for the first time most countries want us to get the hell out of the driver's seat.
Over a curry dinner in Geneva, a South Korean friend confessed to being not entirely thrilled with her European experience. Sure, she had a well-paying job for one of the many international organizations that keep Geneva prosperous, bustling, and awash in dull conferences, but it all lacked a certain something. Europeans no longer believe in anything, she complained -- not like the Americans, who have the oomph and the moral clarity to 'get the job done.'"

Kathryn Johnston
November 21, 2006—GA
Acting on a tip from a confidential informant, police conduct a no-knock raid on the home of 88 year old Kathryn Johnston.
Johnston, described by neighbors as feeble and afraid to open her door at night, opens fire on officers as they burst into her home. Three of the officers are wounded before Johnston is shot and killed.
Relatives say that Johnston lived alone, and legally owned a gun because she was fearful of intruders. She lived in the home for 17 years. Police claim that they find a small amount of marijuana in Johnston's home, but none of the cocaine, computers, money, or equipment described in the affidavit that was used to obtain a warrant.
There are now allegations of a police cover-up.
